A safe campsite begins with a comprehensive inspection of the location, equipment, and surrounding environment. Before participants arrive, every camping site should undergo a systematic inspection to identify and mitigate potential hazards.

🎯 OBJECTIVE

The purpose of campsite inspection is to:

  • Ensure participant safety

  • Identify environmental hazards

  • Verify camping equipment condition

  • Prevent accidents and emergencies

  • Promote responsible and sustainable camping


🏕️ 1. CAMPSITE LOCATION INSPECTION

Select a Safe Campsite

✔ Flat and stable ground

✔ Well-drained area

✔ Safe distance from rivers and streams

✔ Away from steep slopes and cliffs

✔ No loose rocks or landslide zones

✔ Away from dead or hanging tree branches (Widow Makers)

✔ Safe distance from wildlife habitats

✔ Away from electrical hazards

✔ Easily accessible emergency evacuation route


Avoid

❌ Flood-prone areas

❌ Dry riverbeds

❌ Rockfall zones

❌ Marshy land

❌ Dense thorny vegetation

❌ Animal trails

❌ Areas with unstable soil


⛺ 2. TENT INSPECTION

Inspect:

✔ Tent fabric

✔ Waterproof coating

✔ Seams and stitching

✔ Zippers

✔ Guy lines

✔ Tent poles

✔ Pole connectors

✔ Pegs

✔ Groundsheet

Check for:

  • Tears

  • Holes

  • Mold

  • UV damage

  • Broken poles

  • Missing pegs

Reject if:

❌ Structural damage compromises safety.


🪢 3. ROPES & GUY LINES

Inspect:

✔ Rope condition

✔ Knots

✔ Tension

✔ Reflective markings

✔ Anchoring points

Reject if:

  • Frayed

  • Cut

  • Burnt

  • Chemical damage


🔨 4. TENT PEGS & ANCHORS

Check:

✔ Proper insertion angle

✔ Secure anchoring

✔ No bending

✔ Corrosion free

✔ Correct length for soil


🔥 5. CAMPFIRE SAFETY AREA

Inspect:

✔ Designated fire pit

✔ Fire extinguisher available

✔ Water bucket

✔ Sand bucket

✔ Fire blanket

✔ No overhanging branches

✔ Safe clearance (minimum 5 meters)

Never allow fire:

❌ Inside tents

❌ Near fuel

❌ During high winds


🪵 6. COOKING AREA INSPECTION

Check:

✔ Stable cooking surface

✔ LPG cylinder condition

✔ Stove connections

✔ Fuel storage

✔ Fire safety equipment

✔ Proper ventilation

Keep away from:

  • Sleeping tents

  • Dry grass

  • Fuel containers


🚻 7. SANITATION AREA

Inspect:

✔ Toilets

✔ Handwashing station

✔ Waste bins

✔ Grey water disposal

✔ Drinking water source

✔ Hygiene supplies


💧 8. WATER SOURCE INSPECTION

Ensure:

✔ Safe drinking water

✔ Water purification system

✔ No contamination

✔ Separate washing area

✔ Backup water supply


⚡ 9. ELECTRICAL SAFETY

Inspect:

✔ Extension cables

✔ Generator

✔ Lighting

✔ Charging stations

✔ Earthing

Never allow:

❌ Damaged cables

❌ Exposed wiring

❌ Overloaded sockets


🌳 10. TREE SAFETY

Inspect nearby trees for:

✔ Dead branches

✔ Leaning trees

✔ Insect infestation

✔ Weak trunks

✔ Hanging branches

Remove camping tents if risk exists.


🐍 11. WILDLIFE HAZARD INSPECTION

Look for:

✔ Snake holes

✔ Scorpion habitats

✔ Bee nests

✔ Monkey activity

✔ Leopard movement

✔ Elephant corridors (where applicable)

Store food securely.

Monitor:

✔ Rain forecast

✔ Wind speed

✔ Lightning risk

✔ Temperature

✔ Flood warning

✔ Forest fire alerts

Prepare evacuation plan.

Verify:

✔ Ambulance access

✔ Rescue vehicle access

✔ Emergency assembly point

✔ Evacuation routes

✔ GPS coordinates

✔ Mobile network availability

Mandatory Equipment:

✔ Trauma Kit

✔ AED (if available)

✔ Emergency stretcher

✔ Oxygen cylinder (large camps)

✔ Splints

✔ Emergency blankets

✔ CPR mask

✔ Whistle

✔ Torch


📻 15. COMMUNICATION

Ensure availability of:

✔ Mobile phones

✔ Satellite phone (remote camps)

✔ Walkie-talkies

✔ Emergency contact list

✔ Weather updates


🗑️ 16. ENVIRONMENTAL INSPECTION

Follow Leave No Trace Principles:

👥 17. PARTICIPANT SAFETY CHECK

Each participant should have:

✔ Headlamp

✔ Trekking shoes

✔ Gloves

✔ Weather-appropriate clothing

✔ Rain protection

✔ Whistle

✔ Water bottle

✔ Personal medications


📋 19. DAILY CAMPSITE INSPECTION CHECKLIST

Before Activities Begin:

  • ☐ Fire area safe

  • ☐ Cooking area inspected

  • ☐ First Aid Kit stocked

  • ☐ Drinking water available

  • ☐ Toilets clean

🚨 CAMPSITE REJECTION CRITERIA

Do NOT use the campsite if:

❌ Flash flood risk

❌ Rockfall hazard

❌ Dead trees overhead

❌ Wildlife danger

❌ Contaminated water

❌ Unsafe weather

❌ Fire hazard

❌ No emergency access

❌ Unstable terrain
